Scholar Boxer

Master Chang Naizhou, known as “scholar-boxer,” lived and practiced in Hénán province, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, at the center of Chinese culture and martial arts near the Shàolín Temple and legendary Luòyáng. His extensive writings reflect many ideas familiar from classic Tai
Chi Chuan texts. It is rich in cultural allusions and in-depth analyses of yin and yang qi energy and its deployment in movement.
On 1st August 1994, Marnix Wells travelled to Cháng’s village in Xingyang where the master’s family carries on his tradition of Cháng boxing. This book of Chang’s life and teachings sheds new light on the origins of today’s internal martial arts. Twenty-four martial techniques are illustrated with poems and practical instructions.
